The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a Kaduna-based social media activist, Abubakar Muhammad, popularly known as Sultan, over alleged cybercrime and extortion.
According to a report by Zagazola, a petition against Sultan alleged that he operated fake accounts – @OZugwai40986 on X and @Zugwai75 on Instagram – which he used to threaten a victim and demand payments through a crypto wallet and a POS account. The complainant further claimed he was lured to an undisclosed location, sparking fears of a kidnap attempt.
DSS operatives arrested Sultan yesterday at Layin Dan-Masani, Rigachikun in Igabi LGA after investigations linked him to the alleged offences.
The Service said the suspect attempted to delete the incriminating accounts, but cyber experts recovered them from his phone, alongside evidence of payments and chat records.
“This is purely a cybercrime case. The Service is interested in protecting citizens, not politics,” a security source explained, dismissing claims of political undertone.
His arrest has divided opinion online, with some supporters alleging persecution, while others insist the evidence must be tested in court. Sultan is expected to be arraigned soon on charges of cybercrime, extortion, and threats to life.
