As the first rains of the 2026 farming season settled the dust across the fertile plains of Southern Kaduna, farmers have once again prepared their fields with renewed determination. But this year, for thousands of households across Kaduna South Senatorial District, the planting season has come with an added measure of hope.
That hope arrived in Zonkwa, headquarters of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, where Senator Sunday Marshall Katung flagged off the distribution of five trailer loads of fertilizer and 150 water pumping machines to constituents drawn from the eight local government areas of the senatorial district.
The intervention could hardly have come at a better time. With the cost of agricultural inputs rising steadily in recent years, many smallholder farmers have struggled to secure enough fertilizer to cultivate their farms effectively. By easing this burden, the initiative is expected to improve crop yields, strengthen household incomes and contribute to food security across communities.
Agriculture remains the backbone of the senatorial district and also the mainstay of Kaduna State’s economy, accounting for about 42 percent of the state’s Gross Domestic Product. Also, it is estimated that about 60 percent of the population depends directly or indirectly on farming for their livelihood. Supporting farmers with fertilizer at the beginning of the planting season is therefore an important welfare gesture. It is equally an investment in economic growth, rural prosperity and sustainable development.
The distribution exercise, which took place last week, was deliberately structured to ensure wide participation of diverse individuals. Beneficiaries were drawn from all 87 wards and 1,957 polling units across Kaduna South Senatorial District.
Beyond political considerations, the exercise reflected a commitment to inclusiveness, with traditional rulers, religious leaders, persons with disabilities, widows and other vulnerable groups all receiving support. Politicians from different political parties also benefited, underscoring the non-partisan nature of the intervention, and the senator’s overwhelming believe in everyone.
Chairman of the 37-member Distribution Committee drawn from all the eight LGAs, Hon. Christopher Haruna, who is also a former Chairman of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, explained that the programme forms part of Senator Katung’s all-inclusive strategy to strengthen agricultural productivity and improve food security throughout the district.

According to him, the senator remains committed to ensuring that as many constituents as possible benefited from the intervention.
”Senator Katung is committed to ensuring that the benefits of this intervention reach as many constituents as possible. Those who did not benefit in this phase should remain hopeful as arrangements are underway for subsequent batches,” Haruna assured.
Beyond the fertilizer distribution, the provision of 150 water pumping machines signalled an equally important investment in all-year-round farming. In the first phase, seven of the eight local government areas received fourteen pumping machines each to support irrigation and dry-season cultivation.
The significance of this cannot be overstated. With climate variability increasingly affecting rainfall patterns, irrigation has become essential for farmers seeking to maintain production beyond the rainy season. Access to water pumping machines enables farmers to cultivate vegetables and other cash crops during the dry months, creating additional income while improving food availability throughout the year.
For many rural communities, agricultural support of this nature extends beyond increased harvests. It translates into sourcing funds for payment of children school fees, improved family nutrition, stronger local markets and greater economic resilience. Every bag of fertilizer and every pumping machine represented an opportunity for farming families to improve their livelihoods through their own labour.
Senator Katung’s intervention also complements the Kaduna State Government’s ongoing efforts to modernise and improve agriculture, expand productivity and empower farmers with the resources they need to succeed. Such collaboration between federal legislators and state development initiatives demonstrates how coordinated leadership can produce tangible benefits for ordinary citizens.
As farmers prepared the land to begin sowing seeds across Kaduna South, the distribution exercise served as a reminder that meaningful representation is not often measured by speeches or promises, but by practical interventions that improve people’s daily lives.
This is precisely how senator Sunday Marshall Katung has distinguished himself from other legislators, past and present. For thousands of farmers, this season is not simply about planting crops alone, but about planting confidence, opportunity and hope for a more productive farming season.
