Earthwell Climate Change and Environmental Protection Initiative has reaffirmed its commitment to combating the adverse effects of climate change through innovative waste recycling projects and the exploration of biofuel production.
The Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, Mrs. Rashidat Abiola Niyi, stated this during an exhibition of recycled products developed in collaboration with the Transparency and Accountability in Totality (TinT), also known as FollowTaxes, in Kaduna.
Mrs. Niyi explained that the partnership has recorded significant success in transforming industrial waste into useful products, including hand bangles, handbags, pillowcases, locally made earrings, and footwear. She added that the organisation is also exploring the production of environmentally friendly biofuels from grasses as part of efforts to promote sustainable energy alternatives.
According to her, the initiative is aimed at reducing environmental pollution while creating economic opportunities for residents through practical waste-to-wealth solutions.
During the exhibition, participants were taken through various methods of converting waste into valuable products, including the recycling and repurposing of kitchen waste, plastic bags, and discarded clothing materials generated by fashion designers and tailors.
Samples of the finished products were displayed, attracting the interest of stakeholders and community members.
Mrs. Niyi emphasised that climate change and environmental degradation remain major challenges confronting Kaduna State and the country at large, stressing that addressing them requires collective action and sustained commitment from government, civil society organisations, communities, and development partners.
She noted that Earthwell is dedicated to implementing impactful programmes that promote environmental sustainability and climate resilience, adding that the organisation possesses extensive experience in climate change advocacy and environmental protection.
The Earthwell CEO further disclosed that volunteers of the organisation were prepared to train youths and community members on waste-to-wealth initiatives, with a view to creating jobs, enhancing livelihoods, and fostering environmental stewardship at the grassroots level.
Speaking on the collaboration with TinT, She highlighted the organisation’s ongoing efforts to empower women and youths through capacity-building programmes that strengthen community resilience and promote sustainable development.
“TinT has continued to advocate for the recognition of unpaid care work in climate policies while partnering with institutions such as the International Budget Partnership to organise town hall meetings, support women entrepreneurs, and raise awareness on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in tertiary institutions.”
Stakeholders at the event commended the initiative, describing it as a practical approach to tackling environmental challenges while simultaneously creating economic opportunities for communities across Kaduna State.
