The Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association (SKCLA), has condoled with the family of the late President Muhammadu Buhari as well as the Federal Government over the death of the immediate past president.
The condolence was contained in a press release issued in Kafanchan this evening by leader of the group, Apostle Emmanuel Kure.
Former president Buhari passed away at 82 years on Sunday evening at a London hospital after a protracted illness. The news of his death was conveyed via X by his spokesman Garba Shehu.
A federal government delegation led by the vice president Kashim Shettima has since arrived London to bring back the corpse for burial.
The Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association recalled how Buhari fought corruption and instilled discipline in Nigerians during his first brief spell as a military Head of State from 1984 to 1985, attributing it to the regimes’ determination to restore the country’s national pride.
“We remember with nostalgia his first coming as Nigeria’s military Head of State in 1984–1985. During that brief period, there was a determined effort to sanitise the Nigerian system, instill national discipline, confront corruption and restore national pride,” the group said.
It added: “The nostalgia of 1984/85 still lives with many of us in spite of the flaws it came with,” noting that “Buhari made us feel that Nigerians can adapt to discipline with the right leadership in place.”
The group however expressed sadness over the late president’s indifference when their “communities were subjected to unchecked violence, persecution, and marginalisation,” during his second term in office as a civilian president.
They prayed God to heal the nation of its past traumas and raise leaders who will truly serve the nation justly, equitably and truthfully.
As president for eight years from 2015-2023, Buhari visited London several times to see his doctors. At a point many thought he wasn’t going to survive.
His tenure was marred by widespread kidnapping and banditry in the north, and was accused severally of nepotism and favouritism.
The late president’s remains are expected back into the country tomorrow, Tuesday to be buried in his hometown of Daura in Kastina State according to Islamic rites.
