On Thursday, after weeks of speculations, Hon. Iliya Wilson Yangye, the senior legislative aide (SLA) to the Senator representing Kaduna South Senatorial District Sunday Marshall Katung, resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
His letter of resignation cited by Kadunanews24.com dated 30 July 2025 was addressed to the PDP Chairman in Barde Ward, Jema’a Local Government Area. The ward secretary, Kyna Sadiq, acknowledged receipt of the letter.
“I wish to formally resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) effective immediately. This decision is to enable me to concentrate fully on my professional career as an insurance practitioner,” the letter reads in part.
Though the former legislative aide declared why he resigned, it is believed he may be on his way to joining the opposition coalition promoting the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He has been a promoter of the coalition albeit silently.
Since early July Yangye has been accused of romancing with the ADC, holding nocturnal meetings in Abuja. The speculation became rife when his Facebook cover picture was updated with the logo of the ADC some weeks ago.
Prior to joining the PDP in the wake of the general elections in 2023, he had served in the APC government of Nasir El-Rufai. After the elections, Senator Katung appointed him a senior legislative aide until his resignation.
With the El-rufai coalition penetrating the senatorial zone and gaining attention nationwide, Yangye’s decision has yet pointed to the conjecture that he might be heading towards the ADC to join his former boss.
Yangye’s action has also raised concern about the rumour of the position of Senator Katung as political events are unfolding.
In a recent social media post, Ayuba Black, a staunch supporter and defender of Katung from Jema’a local government discountenanced allegations of a possible defection by the senator.
Wilson Yangye’s decision may well be a precursor to other political actions by men around the Senator. Yet, it may also be a solo move.
His decision has thrown confusion in the PDP, especially that the zone which hitherto was the party’s strongest base for decades, is loosing grip.
But the days ahead would definitely unbundle the package in his surprised box of political gift.
