The political sagacity of Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, combined with the inclusive leadership approach of Governor Uba Sani, is widely credited with easing long-standing tensions between the Kaduna State Government and the people of Southern Kaduna. The renewed collaboration has helped restore trust and confidence, creating a more stable and cooperative political atmosphere in the region.
Katung’s negotiation skills and bridge-building efforts have also brought key stakeholders in Southern Kaduna back to the decision-making table, positioning the zone as an active player in shaping political conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a bid to consolidate these gains, the senator has championed a strategic political realignment that has seen many elected officials from the area align more closely with the centre and the ruling party, with the aim of fostering growth and sustainable development.
Against this backdrop, the senator representing Kaduna South Senatorial District has intensified efforts to deliver democratic dividends through a series of constituency projects and social interventions across the eight local government areas of the zone.
Since assuming office in 2023, the lawmaker has initiated a wide range of projects spanning healthcare, education, rural infrastructure, and environmental sustainability, with a clear focus on improving the quality of life of his constituents.
One of the most notable efforts is the rollout of over 40 constituency projects in February 2024 targeted at addressing critical development gaps in communities across Southern Kaduna. These projects include the provision of rural electrification, potable water, road improvements, and the construction and rehabilitation of public facilities. The initiative was to ensure equitable distribution of development across all local governments in the zone.
In the health sector, Senator Katung has demonstrated strong commitment through the launch of “Project 365,” a comprehensive programme aimed at combating viral hepatitis. The initiative focuses on free screening, treatment, and sustained public awareness campaigns, particularly in rural and underserved communities. The programme has been widely regarded as a major step toward tackling preventable diseases in the region.

Complementing this effort is a high-value medical partnership reportedly worth billions of naira, which has facilitated the organisation of medical outreaches and the treatment of common ailments such as malaria, hypertension, and diabetes. In addition, the senator has supported the renovation and upgrading of primary healthcare centres, including the Fadan Ninzo facility in Sanga LGA, to enhance access to quality healthcare services.
Education has also received attention under Katung’s representation. He was actively involved in the establishment of the Federal university of Applied Sciences in Kachia, a move seen as a strategic step toward expanding access to higher education and promoting regional development. The institution is expected to create academic and economic opportunities for young people in the area.
Within the first six months in office, Katung was able to secure employment opportunities for some of his constituents in various federal parastatals, empower farmers with cash support and farming implements, and actively contribute to legislative debates. Among his notable interventions on the floor of the Senate were motions addressing the challenges faced by ginger farmers and the outbreak of Diphtheria in Southern Kaduna, among others.
Beyond infrastructure and health, the senator has implemented various empowerment programmes targeting youths and women. These initiatives, though less publicised, are aimed at improving livelihoods through skills acquisition and financial support.
In his legislative capacity, Katung has also contributed to national discourse on environmental sustainability. As Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology, he has advocated for policies and funding mechanisms to address environmental challenges such as flooding and desertification, which affect many communities in Northern Nigeria.
The senator’s approach reflects a blend of grassroots development and policy-driven interventions, positioning his tenure as one focused on both immediate impact and long-term growth.
The implementation of these projects in constituents across Southern Kaduna has drawn observers, with many expressing optimism that sustained efforts will translate into meaningful and lasting development in the region.
