The ministry of defence has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media alleging that the minister of defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), plans to resign from office.
In a public disclaimer issued on Monday, the office of the minister described the rumour as “malicious” and “entirely fabricated,” insisting that there is no truth whatsoever to the claim.
The disclaimer was signed by the special assistant on media to the minister of defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde.
The ministry said the attention of the minister’s office had been drawn to the false reports being shared across various online and social media platforms, alleging that General Musa intended to step down from his position.
Rejecting the reports in strong terms, the ministry stated that the rumours were the handiwork of mischief-makers seeking to mislead the public.
”The rumours are absolute falsehood borne out of complete mischief,” the statement said.
According to the ministry, General Musa remains fully committed to his responsibilities and is focused on delivering on the federal government’s national security agenda, adding that positive results were already being recorded in the security sector.
The ministry urged Nigerians to disregard the false reports and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of creating unnecessary anxiety among the public.
It also advised media organisations and social media users to verify sensitive information with the appropriate authorities before publication.
